Frequently Asked Questions

Where can I find your products?

You will find Back Roads all across the US in natural & organic health food stores, food coops, and independent grocers with 1 to 20 locations. You will also find us in all Whole Foods on the east coast ~ NY, NJ and the New England states.

You will not find Back Roads in large chain grocers like Albertsons, Sprouts, Stop & Shop, Hannaford’s, Trader Joes, etc.

If you know of a store near you that would be a good fit with Back Roads granola, let us know by emailing info@backroadsgranola.com. We’d be happy to reach out to any and all local stores and markets across the country.

How do I keep my granola fresh?

Back Roads Granola is shipped fresh out of the oven. Shelf life is 9 months. We recommend storing our granola in the bag it’s in or, in glass jars with tight fitting lids. Do not refrigerate or freeze our granola. It will take the crunchiness out of it. Store away from light and heat. A cool cupboard is ideal.

Aren’t all oats gluten-free?

While oats are gluten-free by nature, they’re often cross-contaminated during processing. Contamination can occur when gluten free oats are processed in close proximity to crops containing gluten. Our oats are certified gluten-free, indicating that no cross-contamination has occurred.

Can you make an oil free, unsweetened granola?

It would be impossible to create a paleo recipe, similar to our unsweetened Ancient Grains, without oil. The granola will not roast to a golden brown and smaller ingredients, like sesame seeds, chia seeds and puffed quinoa would fall to the bottom of the bag. Our 4 paleo granola recipes contain no oil. However, they are lightly sweetened with Vermont maple syrup.

Is your Granola Low Sugar?

YES! Back Roads lightly sweetens our granolas to enhance flavor, using only pure maple syrup (no refined cane sugar). Sugar content for Back Roads Granola flavors is 5 grams (or less), per 1/4 cup serving. Additionally, our Ancient Grains granola is completely unsweetened, with no added sugar.

Do we test for Chlormequat?

We and all our organic suppliers are audited annually by our regional USDA-approved Organic certifying agent. In our case it is VOF (Vermont Organic Farmers). Each one of our ingredients is audited and in turn each one of our vendors is audited by their certifying agency to confirm that no synthetic chemicals (such as chlormequat) have been used on the crop, soil, or harvest. We go beyond this with our Glyphosate-free certification, but as yet there isn’t a commercially available test for Chlormequat.  With that being said, should these results be verified by the wider scientific community and testing becomes available, Back Roads would surely be at the front of the queue to prove our quality to our consumers with yet another certification.
